Château Rollan de By: Vineyards
The cellars lie close to the road that runs between Bégadan and Port de By, the former a little town that lies inland, the latter a settlement around a small inlet on the Gironde. This small port was an active trading post during the 18th and 19th centuries, but it is rare to see even a rowing boat here these days. The facilities sit cheek-by-jowl with the other domaines in the Guyon portfolio, including Château Greysac, in the tiny hamlet of By.
Behind the cellars there is only low-lying marshland, so the vineyards are all spread out on the far side of the aforementioned road. Here, mixed with the other Guyon vineyards, are 87 hectares of vines dedicated to Château Rollan de By, all of which sit on a croupe of gravel and clay running in a roughly southwest to northeast-and-east direction, the marshland on either side a combination of silted up waterways (in the case of the land to the south, feeding into the channel at the Port de By) and drainage channels.
