Château Gaby: Vineyards

Château Gaby sits at the crest of the slope behind the town of Fronsac, overlooking its vineyards and the waters of the Dordogne. Not far away at the foot of the slope is Château de La Dauphine, and both properties have vines on the prestigious côtes. There are few neighbours of note, although follow the road round past the château, to the west, and you will come to Château Pey Labrie, Château Mausse and then Château Cassagne Haut-Canon, the latter property perhaps the most noteworthy of the three.

There are a little over 16 hectares of vines here, the vast majority Merlot of course, but with both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon maintaining a presence in the vineyard. They are planted down the slopes below the château, on soils of colluvial sand and gravel near the top of the côtes, while moving down the slope there is a mix of clay and Calcaire de Castillon, and on the very lowest parts of the slope there is the equally highly regarded Molasses du Fronsadais.

The work in the vineyard is organic, the conversion having commenced in 2014, with full certification coming only in 2018. The work in the vineyard is mostly effected by hand.
