Château La Cardonne: Vineyards

Château La Cardonne is located on the road running east out of Lesparre-Médoc, on the left hand side, just after you pass Château Preuillac. Indeed, looking through old editions of Cocks et Féret from the 19th and early 20th centuries I see Château Preuillac went by the name of Château Preuillac-La Cardonne for a while. Just to the north is the fairy-tale gothic mansion of Château Ramafort, called Romefort in many older texts (and on some current maps), while to the east is the little-known Château Le Cenacle.

Today there are 45 hectares planted on the estate; the majority (albeit a slight one) of the vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, at 51% of the total, with Merlot accounting for 45%, and the final 4% is Petit Verdot. There have been some new plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon in 2020, which will bring the vineyard back up to 55 hectares again, so the total percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon should rise further given time. Of note, Cabernet Franc also used to have a presence in the vineyard, but it is not a popular choice up in the northern Médoc (or further south either), and here it was uprooted and replaced by Petit Verdot.
