Michel Redde, 2024 Update

I continue my deep dive into the 2022 vintage in the Central Vineyards in this report, with a fairly thorough tasting of all the relevant cuvées from one of the leading names in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, Michel Redde. This complements other recent reports focused entirely or largely on this vintage, including recently published missives on the 2022 vintage at Henri Bourgeois, Pierre Martin, Château de Tracy, Domaine de Villargeau and Alain & Loïc Cailbourdin (with more reports still coming down the pipeline).

Briefly, the origins of the Redde family’s domaine can be traced back to Michel Redde himself, who established the domaine in the early 1950s. A descendent of small-scale viticulteurs and smallholders, Michel brought the family’s various parcels of agricultural land together, and it was he who shifted their focus from polyculture to the vine. He settled at La Moynerie, the Redde residence looking out onto the Route Nationale 7, the cellars just behind it.

Thierry Redde took over from Michel in 1977, and continued to grow the domaine, significantly extending the cellars, permitting some work to be achieved by gravity. At the front of the house the RN7 was upgraded to create the A77, making for a rather less scenic and noisier environment. But the vines and the terroir were unaffected, and Thierry soldiered on, continuing to turn out some very strong wines.

Today Thierry has handed over responsibility for the domaine to his two sons, Sébastien and Romain Redde. They have continued to develop the domaine, a noteworthy development being the addition of the Barre à Mine cuvée, which still feels like a recent addition to the portfolio but looking back at my old notes I see the first vintage was 2014, ten years ago (how time flies!). More recent developments include the creation of the new Les Toupées cuvée, and the shift of the domaine into organic viticulture, with certification from Ecocert coming in the 2023 vintage.
