Bordeaux 2015 Primeurs: Margaux Tasting Notes

Margaux is an appellation which for my palate, apart from perhaps the top handful of four or five châteaux, often tends to underwhelm a little. Then, suddenly, along comes a vintage that takes my breath away. This was certainly the case in 2010, the wines dark and convincing. The appellation as ever was led by Château Margaux, Château Palmer, Château d’Issan and Château Rauzan-Ségla, but there were scores of other interesting and convincing wines.

We have a similar situation here in 2015. While I don’t feel as convinced across the board in 2015 as I did in 2010 at the primeurs (and the wines in 2010 were even better when I came back to them at two years of age) this is still an excellent vintage for the Margaux appellation. It is certainly superior to the 2014 vintage, the 2013 vintage obviously, 2012 and 2011; there are of course one or two wines that buck the trend, but on the whole 2015 is stronger than all. Just a notch ahead of all of them, however, was 2010. And there were plenty of great wines in 2009 too.
