Bordeaux 2012 Primeurs: Médoc Tasting Notes
Proprietor of Château Preuillac, Jean-Christophe Mau, is also director of the négociant firm Bordeaux Diffusion, and so has a much broader view of the vintage than would be expected when compared to other managers and proprietors up and down the length of the Gironde, many of whom are quite insular in terms of what they have tasted. He feels that for Bordeaux as a whole, the 2012 vintage is generally better than 2011, although he is not so sure of this when it comes to the northern Médoc, where the ripening is always much later than grander terroirs further south.
For what it is worth, I think any comparison of 2012 with 2011 as a whole requires too much generalisation to be valid, as 2012 is certainly superior in some parts (Pomerol, perhaps Pessac-Léognan) but less so in others (the major left bank communes, Sauternes). As I stated way back in my introduction to the vintage, the quality in 2012 straddles that seen in 2011, and as such it is a vintage that defies easy ranking.
