Domaine de Veilloux: Tasting & Drinking

The Sologne region of the Loire valley is a fascinating one, home to some dedicated vignerons, making a very interesting range of wines. Domaine de Veilloux seems to me to be one of the more interesting domaines I have encountered here, and yet like many other domaines in this region it seems somewhat off the radar.

The domaine is unusual in that the focus here is almost exclusively Cheverny. I confess I find the idiosyncratic Cour-Cheverny the region’s most appealing wine, and yet the wines made by the Quenouix family have certainly piqued my interest. Although white Cheverny tends to feature Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, there is a greater emphasis on Menu Pineau here, which I enjoy, and the wines seem distinctive and appealing as a result. Even in the domaine cuvée, in which it contributes just 15% of the blend, it adds an extra textural and flavour element. In Argilo, however, where it makes up 40% of the final blend, it completely transforms the wine. Les Veilleurs steps it up again, and has to be one of the most convincing wines from Cheverny I have tasted in many years.
