Pascal et Nicolas Reverdy: Vineyards
The domaine is based to the north of Sancerre in Maimbray (I have now reverted to the spelling that the Reverdy family seem to prefer), a small hamlet found to the north of Verdigny, and north-west of Saint-Satur. It lies just a few hundred metres south of Sury-en-Vaux. As I have already explained in some detail in my introduction, the domaine is therefore in a good position to take advantage of the Kimmeridgian terroir that extends northwards from Bué and through Verdigny. These Kimmeridgian rocks are predominantly Calcaire à Astartes and Lumachelle de Exogyra virgula, and the vines of this domaine (and others in the region) run up the gently undulating slopes that characterise this part of the Sancerre vineyard. To the east there is a plateau of limestone caillottes and flint, largely covered by the trees of the Bois de Charnes, and to the west a plateau of sandstone, sand and clay, which is better suited to arable agriculture.
Having started out with 3.5 hectares, Pascal, Nathalie and Sophie Reverdy have expanded their domaine considerably over the past few years, and they now have 13.8 hectares under their direction. These vines include 10.8 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, and a smaller portion of Pinot Noir, totalling just 3 hectares. The increasing importance of this latter variety to the Reverdy family is perhaps indicated by the most recent addition to their vinous portfolio, which was a 1.5-hectare parcel of Pinot Noir, acquired in 2009. The vines, with an average age greater than 25 years, and are all planted on the aforementioned limestone slopes.
