Domaine Mosse: Vineyards

As indicated the domaine is located on the main road running northwards out of St Lambert du Lattay. Other notable vignerons located here include the aforementioned Jo Pithon, who is based literally just around the corner, and the Ogereau family who are located essentially on the same road, although as it heads southwards, out of the other side of town. The 15.6-hectare vineyard is dominated by Chenin Blanc which accounts for 8.5 hectares, accompanied by about 3 hectares of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a few plots amounting to less than 1 hectare dedicated to Grolleau, Gamay and Chardonnay. The vines are planted at a fairly standard 5,500 pieds per hectare, and the majority lie within close proximity to the cellars. The only exception is 48 ares (0.48 hectares) of Chenin Blanc in Savennières, a parcel which was acquired in 2007.

Underfoot the soils here are mostly schist and sandstone, with some areas of surface clay. As indicated in my introduction René and Agnès have undertaken much replanting since taking over the domaine, the vineyards having been allowed to deteriorate by the previous owner. For this they have sourced Chenin Blanc by massale selection from the vineyards of Mark Angeli, the cuttings subsequently nurtured in a nursery run by Guy Bossard.
