Domaine Laporte: Tasting & Drinking
I have in the past heard sniffy comments on the wines of Domaine Laporte, allegations that these are nothing more than négociant wines, made from bought in fruit, an ‘on the side’ operation for the Bourgeois family. At the top end, nothing could be further from the truth. These top cuvées are all made using Domaine Laporte fruit by a dedicated Domaine Laporte team. And they originate from interesting terroirs; the soils of Le Rochoy, part of the band of flint that runs north-south through Sancerre and Saint-Satur, are particularly noteworthy. The grapes for these cuvées are hand-picked, fermented with all the technical savoir-faire of the Bourgeois family, and the end results can be very good indeed. I have also found Le Rochoy, machine-picked rather than the product of a manual harvest, to be of good quality before now.
