Domaine des Huards: Vineyards
As I have indicated in my introduction, the domaine lies a short distance north of the village of Cour-Cheverny. A few hundred metres to the north lies the Beuvron, which runs roughly westwards here and continues on until it eventually drains into the Loire at Candé-sur-Beuvron. Directly south of the chai is a significant chunk of the vineyard, although many vines are located further from the domaine. Much of the neighbouring land, notably, is given over to arable crops or woodland. Viticulture is not the dominant activity in this part of the Loire Valley.
Nevertheless, today Michel Gendrier has 35 hectares of vines to tend, and this includes 8 hectares of Romorantin, which he claims is the largest single holding in the world. The terroir here is Miocene limestone, although the more superficial soils that lie over this range from calcareous clay to being more sandy in nature.
