Domaine Delaporte: Tasting & Drinking

With the transfer of control from one generation to the next, a domaine that was already turning out wines of good reputation has stepped up its game. The wines made here by Matthieu, white, rosé and red, are excellent additions to the range of Sancerre-Chavignol options for drinkers.

Matthieu Delaporte despises the varietal flavour of Sauvignon Blanc, and he wants to feel the terroir in his wines. “For this”, he says, “you need deeper roots and good ripeness at harvest”. Hence his move to working the soil, and his attention to detail when it comes to the picking. His work comes through in the quality and character of his wines, the Silex cuvée in white carrying an attractive minerality, while Les Monts Damnés has a more saline character. The reds are also worth looking at though, with good form and gradation of quality as you work through the range, with Le Cul de Beaujeu being a particularly strong addition to the Sancerre Rouge shortlist.
