Château Villars: Vineyards
The domaine is located in Saillans, not at all far from Château Fontenil, which lies just to the northeast, in the hamlet of Saillans itself. Other neighbours include Château Moulin Haut-Laroque, just to the south, and the vines of Château La Vieille Cure to the east, closer to the course of the Isle. This is, in other words, something of a Fronsac quality hotspot.
The vines are scattered across hills and slopes of clay and limestone soils, looking down onto the waters of the Isle. There are just shy of 30 (29.65 to be precise) hectares of vines today, as well as a further 6 hectares dedicated to meadow and woodland. The vines are predominantly Merlot, accounting for about three-quarters of the vineyard, the remainder mostly Cabernet Franc, with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. The work in the vineyard is very conventional, with no certified recourse to organic or biodynamic methods.
