Château Potensac: Vineyards

Château Potensac is located in the hamlet of the same name, in the commune of Ordonnac, in the Médoc appellation. As I have already indicated in the history presented, it incorporates the vines of several other properties which were absorbed into the estate during the late 20th century, including Château Gallais-Bellevue, Château Goudy, Château La Cardonne and Château Lassalle. The terroir has the familiar mix of alluvial gravel and red clay, lying over a deeper limestone bedrock.

The vineyard has grown considerably over the years, the figures presented by Bernard Ginestet during the 1980s now long out of date. Today the team have 84 hectares of vines, planted to 46% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, these two varieties accounting for the majority of the vineyard. These are complemented by 16% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carmenère and 1% Petit Verdot. They are planted at a density of 7,700 vines per hectare. The work in the vineyard is conventional, with no recourse to organic or biodynamic viticulture.
