Château La Tour de By: Vineyards

Château La Tour de By is located very close to Port de By, in the wild northern lands of the Médoc. It is directly northeast of Bégadan, and its vineyards are located on the same gravelly croupe which is home to Château Rollan de By, Château Greysac and Château Haut-Condissas, among others, all of which sit shoulder-to-shoulder in the little hamlet of By, which is just half a kilometre down the road.

The imposing château sits close to the road, the old lighthouse behind it, nestled among the vines. The estate covers 94 hectares all told, of which 74 hectares are planted to vineyard. As hinted at above, the soils underfoot are Quaternary gravel, mixed with some clay. The varieties to be found here are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, planted at densities from 6,600 up to 10,000 vines per hectare, and with an average age of more than 40 years.
