G d’Estournel: Tasting & Drinking
My first taste of G d’Estournel, or Goulée as it was known at the time, was the inaugural vintage, 2003, which I encountered over dinner during the 2007 primeurs campaign. As was the case with a number of wines that evening, especially those poured late into the night, I did not scribble down any tasting note, my palate having long given up after a lengthy day of tasting. Nevertheless it was easily recognisable as something very different for the Médoc, not lean and austere as some of the wines in this appellation can be, but more concentrated and approachable. A Médoc for the modern day, perhaps?
