Château Yvonne: Tasting & Drinking

My first experiences with Château Yvonne concerned the wines of the Lamunière era, when they tended to show dark fruit, rich tannins and readily apparent oak. For this reason although the wines were clearly of quality they weren’t what to everybody’s taste, the style perhaps leaning a little more towards the structure and substance of Bordeaux than what we might expect from the Loire Valley. Having said that I admired them for what they were, in the same way that I admired the wines of Thierry Germain when he started out, even if they were dark, extracted and tended to display a lot of oak. That’s not to say I don’t prefer the beautifully perfumed and floral wines he has made in more recent times, though.
