Château Yvonne: Vineyards

Mathieu Vallée now has 11 hectares of vines to work with, although these are spread across 28 parcels in three villages. The varieties planted are predominantly Cabernet Franc, which stands at 8 hectares, but as indicated in my introduction there is also a significant proportion of Chenin Blanc planted, there being 3 hectares.

Naturally this being Saumur when it comes to terroir it is limestone that dominates, sometimes in quite a profound fashion, with only a very thin layer of clay soil on top. Mathieu vinifies according to terroir and to some extent parcel, although I provide more details on which parcels go into which wine in my rundown of the range of cuvées below. Nevertheless, notable parcels include, on the limestone plateau on the left bank of the Loire, Les Trézellières, La Grande Vignoble and Le Gory, these vineyards being the principal sources of the domaine’s Chenin Blanc grapes. Around the commune of Champigny, there is Cabernet Franc planted in Le Clos Lintier, Les Chalonges, Les Pierres Blanches and numerous other plots.
