Domaine de Rocheville: Vineyards

As noted the new winery sits above Château de Targé, in the commune of Parnay. There are 16 hectares all told, and the vast majority of this is gathered very closely around the domaine. The only distant plot is the aforementioned Clos de la Thibaudière, in Brézé. The terroir across the entire domaine is therefore predominantly Turonian limestone, with various types of more superficial soils, largely clay with or without varying degrees of sand. Despite the relative youth of the domaine there are plenty of old vines here, the vineyards having been long established when Philippe Porché arrived, with many vineyards aged more than 30 years. The domaine is run using conventional farming methods, with no recourse to organic or biodynamic viticulture.

Domaine de Rocheville: Wines

The portfolio of wines is an interesting one, ranging from everyday drinking red up to concentrated, oak-influenced wines for the cellar. The whites are impressive. A few general rules can be applied; on the whole the vines are hand-harvested and the fruit sorted by hand and eye, and when the time comes it is pressed using new pneumatic equipment. Jérôme Callet and Philippe Porché oversee all stages of the operation, with assistance from Philippe’s wife Agnès. Other details vary according to the cuvée, however, and so I deal with them individually below.
