Loïc Mahé: Vineyards
It is without a doubt that it is Loïc’s Savennières cuvées that are the real interest here, and so it makes sense to focus on the origins of these wines. The Savennières vineyards are in two specific plots. The first is in the lieu-dit known as Les Fougeraies, which is situated fairly centrally, midway between the Moulin de Beaupréau and the Moulin de Gué. The vineyard is owned by Baron Brincard, one of the aforementioned noble families long associated with the appellation, and Mahé’s plot is just one of several he rents out to a number of growers. The soils are sandy loess, with well-drained wind-blown sedimentary materials over a deeper schist, and as a result the site tends to produce lighter, more airy wines. Once you have located the Moulin de Gué the plot is not hard to locate; head north past the windmill and take the first right, down a narrow track. The vineyard is about 200 metres further on, on the left.
