Château Maucaillou: Vineyards

Château Maucaillou is located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, situated to the west of the D2, as it runs the gauntlet through the low-lying territories that span the gap between the vineyards of Margaux (close by, to the south-east) and St Julien (rather further away, to the north). Even as a seasoned visitor to Bordeaux, one who spends too much of his time (arguably too much) driving from an appointment at one famous château to the next, arriving at Château Maucaillou – even though the estate lies just a few minutes drive from the famed Route des Châteaux – feels a little like the discovery of some uncharted land. The château and associated buildings seem to sit as an island in a sea of vines, sandwiched between walls of woodland to the north and the south.

In truth Château Maucaillou sits at the heart of a region of active viticultural activity. As noted in my history of the estate, it sits very close to the Médoc’s railway line, although wine is generally transported south to the city, port and warehouses by road rather than rail these days (which is a shame). The village of Grand Poujeaux, just to the south, is home to a number of significant properties, most notably Château Poujeaux which is within easy walking distance of Château Maucaillou, and just beyond that Château Branas Grand Poujeaux and then Château Chasse-Spleen.
