Bordeaux 2014 Primeurs: Margaux Tasting Notes

Looking back at recent years I found the 2010 vintage particularly strong in Margaux. Otherwise, I have to confess that I am on some occasions a little underwhelmed by what I find when tasting across this appellation. Once you get away from that gravel heartland where Château Margaux and the other big names are located, the wines sometimes veer towards a more delicate style, sometimes with a rather leafy freshness. At their best they can be quite charming, perfumed and minerally, but equally they can lack impact.

Happily, however, in 2014 the appellation as a whole seems to have put on a fairly decent show. While it is nothing like the confidence and quality seem in 2010, this is otherwise one of the stronger vintages for this appellation for some years. If the wines are released at sensible prices, there might be some attractive drinking opportunities here.
