Château de Villeneuve: Tasting & Drinking
So, more than two decades on from that first encounter with the wines of Château de Villeneuve, what do I think of the wines now? Today, I would position Jean-Pierre Chevallier and Château de Villeneuve close to the very top of the appellation; this is a domaine turning out superlative wines, both in red and white. The name still has less caché than Clos Rougeard for example, but then nowhere in Saumur-Champigny has that, and we should not expect it. In the domaine’s favour, the wines are far more accessible, more widely available, and while they are appropriately priced for their quality they are nevertheless much more affordable than your average bottle of Le Bourg from Les Frères Foucault.
