Les Maisons Rouges: Vineyards
Les Maisons Rouges is located in Loir-en-Vallée, on the right bank of the Loir, upstream of Lhomme, the heart of the Jasnières appellation. Today Julien works 8.5 hectares of vines, distributed between the Jasnières and the Coteaux du Loir appellations. Having said that, recent restructuring means that at the time of writing only about 7 hectares are in full production, the other 1.5 hectares having been replanted. As detailed in my introduction to the domaine the varieties favoured by the Jardin family are Chenin Blanc and Pineau d’Aunis, the former accounting for two-thirds of the vineyard, the latter just one-third.
As already noted the philosophy of work in the vineyard evolved during Benoit and Élisabeth’s tenure, and the domaine has thus been organic for at least twenty years, with biodynamic principles applied (and certified) for the latter half of this period.
