Domaine Saurigny: Tasting & Drinking

Jérôme Saurigny is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the leading ‘natural’ vignerons in the Loire Valley, and many who have tasted his wines adore them. I certainly see interesting and positive features in many of these cuvées, including vibrant flavours, superbly defined acid backbones, vigour and energy of texture. To be frank, though, I also see many distractions. Some wines show an oxidative streak which is certain not to be to everybody’s taste. Some of the reds, particularly those from the 2010 vintage that feature Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Franc show rather stewed flavours, the fruit character lacking freshness, which I can only think relates to timing of picking but it may possibly reflect some process in the cellars.
