Château d’Epiré: Vineyards
The village of Épiré lies just upstream of Savennières and La Possonnière, the two other communes eligible for the Savennières appellation. Château d’Epiré sits right on the side of the road which traverses the village. Behind it there are gardens with mature trees, an orangery, tennis court and the aforementioned chapel. Beyond these are some, but not all, of the vineyards.
The estate accounts for 11 hectares of the appellation, this total including 1 hectare of Cabernet Franc, whereas the remainder is naturally dedicated to Chenin Blanc. The largest vineyard is Le Parc, an 8-hectare lieu-dit of which the Bizards own 5 hectares, the other 3 hectares being in the possession of Château de Chamboureau, in other words Domaine FL. This is the vineyard that lies next to the park behind the château (which is presumably how it came by its name). The soils here are stony, predominantly schist (the image on the preceding page was taken in Le Parc) which is very typical of the appellation of course.
