Nicolas Joly and the Clos de la Coulée de Serrant: Tasting & Drinking
The wines of Nicolas Joly incite considerable debate; to say they are controversial would perhaps be something of an understatement. This is remarkable when we consider the favoured location of the vines, and the extraordinarily high quality of wines made by some of the growers lucky enough to have a few vines on the Roche-aux-Moines, including Damien Laureau, Claude Papin and Domaine FL. These growers are turning out exemplary wines one vintage after another, while chez Joly things seem a little more hit and miss. Despite this, and despite the fact that the wine of the Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is among the most expensive in the entire Loire Valley, Nicolas and Virginie Joly clearly have no trouble selling their wines. Demand far outstrips supply, suggesting a loyal fan base somewhere.
