Clos de l’Écotard: Tasting & Drinking
I first encountered the wines of Clos de l’Écotard back in 2013, when I tasted the 2012 Clos de l’Écotard Saumur Blanc at the Salon des Vins de Loire. More than a decade has since passed though, and I confess I forget exactly how I encountered this particular bottle. Did I attend a tasting of Saumur wines? Was it a bottle somebody brought to dinner? I can’t recall, but no matter, as my tasting note lives to tell the tale; in what was only Michel Chevré’s second vintage, there was evident promise here. The years of experience, working alongside Thierry Germain at Domaine de Roches Neuves, clearly counted for something.
Since then my encounters with this estate and its wines have been fleeting, but sensing a renewed energy that came with the arrival of Thibaud Chevré, who not only works alongside his father but is clearly stepping up to take on a newly expanded vineyard, the domaine rapidly rose up my list of ‘must visit’ names. I finally called in on Thibaud in 2022, to find a domaine in the process of revitalisation, with an expansion of vineyards and cellars underway.
