Château Reynon: Vineyards
Château Reynon is situated on a steep hill, the land falling away in quite a steep fashion here, down towards the valley of the Garonne. It sits in the commune of Beguey, but for all intents and purposes it is on the peripheries of the town of Cadillac. The area is awash with vineyards, although there are few if any noteworthy names among their neighbours. Perhaps Château Réaut is the best known, although this property is found about 6 kilometres downstream, in Rions.
There are 28 hectares of vines here, divided between red and white varieties. The reds account for 65% of the vineyard, these being 43% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. The whites, perhaps surprisingly bearing in mind the estate’s reputation, account for just 35%, and this is almost exclusively Sauvignon Blanc, accounting for 34.5% of the total vineyard, the remaining 0.5% being Semillon. The average age of the vines is just 23 years, relatively young, but this reflects a program of planting undertaken since the 1980s. This program has also facilitated a change in planting density, from the low-density planting favoured during the 1950s up to a more typical 5,500 vines per hectare today.
