Les Perrières: Vineyards

The vineyards of Les Perrières are located on the limestone plateau around the hamlet of Meyney, above the woods and vine-covered slopes of La Rivière. Indeed, Château de la Rivière is one of the nearest neighbours of note, although Château Plain Point, situated a little way to the east, is slightly closer. This places the vineyards close to two well-known names in Fronsac, but in truth the vines of Les Perrières lie in the commune of Villegouge, just outside the viticultural boundary for the Fronsac appellation, which runs close by, to the south and east.

When vinified to create G Acte the vineyard was broader, with parcels in Mouillac and Salignac as well as Villegouge, but as Les Perrières the project has been refocused on the parcels at Meyney, in Villegouge, and it is these vines I describe here. The vineyard covers 3.6 hectares all told, divided between three parcels. Just to the east of the hamlet of Meyney is the parcel Les Canards, a little less than a hectare of Cabernet Franc, while just on the far side of the village, to the west, is a second parcel of about 1 hectare, planted to the same variety. This is Les Poulains. In typically precise fashion, the Guinaudeau family declare the planting of 9283 Cabernet Franc vines divided between these two parcels; of course these were all propagated by sélection massale, exclusively using material taken from the Guinaudeau nursery, which was established using vines propagated from the ‘mother’ vines at Château Lafleur. The third and largest parcel is located directly north of Les Poulains, and there are about 1.6 hectares of vines here, divided between three blocks christened Les Cheminées, Ducraux and La Maison Rouge. These three blocks are given over entirely to Merlot (of which, should you be interested, there are 9186 vines planted).
