Château Clarke: Tasting & Drinking

Château Clarke is clearly one of the leading properties in the Listrac-Médoc appellation, and while the wines have long been worthy, very recent vintages have displayed a more notable consistency of quality. If I were asked to pick a favourite I might say the 2018 vintage probably just edges it, by a whisker and no more than that, ahead of the 2019 and 2020 vintages, which have also shown merit. But at the time of writing I have only tasted the more recent vintages as unfinished wines from barrel, and not from bottle. Time will tell which of this trio of top-notch vintages turns out to be the most exciting wine.

The 2016 vintage is also one to look out for, but prior to that you have to go all the way back to 2010 to find a wine of comparable quality. Other vintages, however, have shown less well, although to be fair some of them were very difficult years especially 2017, 2013, 2012 and the like. (8/9/21)
