Château Cap de Faugères: Vineyards

Château Cap de Faugères sits at the very western edge of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, looking out across a shallow valley to the vineyards of St Emilion, and of course the new chai at Château Faugères. The vineyards of Château Cap de Faugères, Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères are all naturally closely related, and indeed between Château Cap de Faugères and the cellars of Château Faugères lie the vines of both Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères.

The soils here mirror exactly those at the western edge of the St Emilion appellation, after all the two appellations are adjacent and sit on the edge of same plateau. There is clay and limestone in the upper layers here, most probably Calcaire de Castillon, with deeper Molasses de Fronsadais. The vineyards are quite expansive, the 46 hectares that are planted up dwarfing the vineyards of Château Faugères and Château Péby Faugères. The vines are 30 years old on average, and the varieties planted are 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. They are planted at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare.
