Les Vignes de l’Angevin: Vineyards
The vineyards of Les Vignes de l’Angevin are located around the village of Chahaignes, and are thus eligible for the Coteaux du Loir appellation. In itself, this is controversial, as the slope that runs down to the village is all-but continuous with the slope on which the vineyards of Jasnières sit proud. There is little logic for one to be Jasnières and the other not, and we can only assume that the decision to draw the appellation boundary short of Chahaignes had some political basis. To locals such as Jean-Pierre, I can only assume there is a perceived status that comes with the Jasnières appellation, and not with the Coteaux du Loir. To the outsider not familiar with the vineyards of the Loire away from the beaten track that passes through Sancerre, Vouvray, Chinon and Muscadet, I feel both are probably equally obscure. Nevertheless Jean-Pierre is quick to point out that the wines of Chahaignes were once of great renown (as well-known as Jasnières, perhaps?), and naturally this potential for quality still exists today.
