Thomas Batardière: Tasting & Drinking
The raw material chez Batardière is clearly of high quality; my encounter with the 2019 vintage, Chenin Blanc tasted from barrel and cuve while the wines were still in élevage, impressed with significant promise. The 2019 L’Esprit Libre was saline and challenging, while the 2019 Les Cocus showed a richer but still salty bed of orchard fruits. At the time of tasting, Thomas had not added any sulphites, and he had not at that moment decided whether or not he would. On the basis of my encounter with the 2018 L’Esprit Libre on that same day, a zero-added sulphites cuvée already giving way to a toasted and nutty seam of oxidation, I rather hope he does.
