Joël Taluau & Thierry Foltzenlogel: Vineyards
In recent years the domaine has benefited from the construction of new facilities (pictured) located in the little hamlet of Chevrette, and indeed in some older texts it has been referred to as Domaine de la Chevrette. There are a number of other domaines here, including the Cognard-Taluau family (Veronique’s cousins) of Vins Cognard and Domaine Lorieux et Fils. Chevrette is located fairly high up the slope above the town of Bourgueil, north and west a little of Yannick Amirault.
Despite this location the domaine’s focus is almost exclusively St Nicolas de Bourgueil, where 25 hectares of the domaine’s 32 hectares of vines are located, with just 7 hectares in the Bourgueil appellation. The vines are mostly planted on soils of siliceous clay over limestone bedrock, with gentle south-facing slopes of up to 15% in parts. The work in the vineyards is neither biodynamic nor organic, and is perhaps best described as viticulture raisonnée, applying chemical treatments only as and when required. The soils between the rows is grassed over. The vines planted vary in age, those less than 35 years of age treated as young vines, and the older vines range from 35 up to 80 years of age, but they are 100% Cabernet Franc.
