Catherine & Pierre Breton: Tasting & Drinking
There is no doubt in my mind that in Bourgueil today Pierre Breton remains one of the more significant vignerons. He really made his name with the style of wine I like, serious cuvées of Cabernet Franc that deserve an appropriate amount of time in the cellar. He still makes these wines, although in more recent times he seems to have gained more of a reputation for the entry-level ‘natural’ styles, and I suspect many drinkers who know of his work do so because they have tasted one of these wines. Certainly, when I have seen Pierre at public tastings, it is always the trendy vin de soif styles that he brings, starting with Avis de Vin Fort and ending with Trinch!, or maybe one of Catherine’s La Dilettante (which translates as the dabbler) cuvées from Vouvray.
