Château Puygueraud: Vineyards
Château Puygueraud is located in Saint-Cibard, one of the communes eligible for the modern-day Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. It is located at the peak of a gently rising slope which reaches a height of 117 metres, positively stratospheric for the generally low-lying Bordeaux region. Indeed, this is the highest point of all the region’s vineyards. Near neighbours of note include Château Puyfromage, just to the north of the village of Saint-Cibard, and Château Le Puy, which sits between these two properties.
Today there are 49 hectares of vines here, the majority of which are gathered closely around the château, on slopes of clay and limestone. The vineyard is divided between red and white varieties; beginning with the former, these account for 44 hectares, with Merlot now completely dominating the vineyard at 80% of the total, with 15% planted to Cabernet Franc and 5% to Malbec. This fruit is channelled into first and second wines, more detail on which below. The remaining 5 hectares are planted to white varieties, namely Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. These are planted on a cool north-facing slope of deep moisture-retaining clay.
