Thierry Valette is not quite a lone exponent of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux; even if other vignerons dedicated to biodynamics, such as Claire Laval and Dominique Techer of Gombaude-Guillot, are easily overlooked, few today would make the same mistake with Pontet-Canet. Nevertheless Thierry Valette’s wines are some of the more convincing examples, in that although they show the purity and bright character (and, it has to be said, in the style of the lesser cuvées the idiosyncrasies) that we might expect from an estate turning out low-sulphur, biodynamic, ‘natural’ wine, they also retain some of the colours, confident textures and appealing flavours that Bordeaux addicts are looking for.
