Clos Lunelles: Tasting & Drinking
I have often thought Château Monbousquet to be the poster boy for the Perse style, but having said that in some vintages the wines of this estate can come across as relatively fresh and appealing, and are perhaps less typical of Perse, and are certainly less extreme than other wines in the Perse portfolio. I wonder if instead it is the Clos Lunelles which should be regarded as the Perse exemplar; with a super-concentrated substance thanks to those low yields, aromas of baked and dried fruits reflecting the desired sur-maturité at harvest time, and a super-saturated colour and huge swathes of robust tannins reflecting the tendency to extract heavily, and then extract a little bit more, everything for which the wines of Gérard Perse are renowned can be found in this cuvée.
