Pierre Jacques Druet: Tasting and Drinking
Whatever one thought of Pierre Jacques Druet, his distinctive philosophies and his penchant for experimentation, his strangely-shaped vats and his near-boiling fermentation temperatures, it was impossible not to believe in his wines. Over more than four decades he gained a reputation for excellence within the Bourgueil appellation, his wines offering as much as any other in the region, and sometimes a whole lot more.
When I first wrote this profile I wholeheartedly endorsed the domaine, and recommended those sufficiently inquisitive pay him a visit. But sadly time has moved on. I am sorry to report that the dog passed on a few years after my visit. And more than a few years later, having gone into liquidation, the domaine ceased to exist. There is a glimmer of hope, however. The domaine was acquired by Frédéric Brochet, the dynamo winemaker behind Ampelidae, and he intends to continue production here.
