Château Falfas: Vineyards
The domaine is situated about a kilometre from the banks of the Gironde, right on the union of the Garonne and the Dordogne. It lies within the limits of the Côtes de Bourg appellation, and is downstream of the town of Bourg and the Mitjavile domaine, Roc de Cambes.
There are 20 hectares of vines all-told, largely situated on the slopes to the south of the château. The vines planted are 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Côt (or Malbec, or even Pressac, as the locals are more used calling it). The average age of the vines is 35 years, and the soils underfoot are a mix of gravel, clay and degraded limestone. The deeper bedrock is also limestone of course, this being typical for the Bourg vineyards, and the type of limestone is the desirable Calcaire à Astéries.
As for viticulture, this has been biodynamic for about three decades now. Thus the work in the vineyard avoids all chemical products, and vine maladies are treated with only copper sulphate, wettable sulphur, herbal tisanes and associated biodynamic mixtures. The practice is today certified by both Ecocert and Biodyvin.
