Château d’Aiguilhe: Tasting & Drinking

As I have indicated in my introduction to this profile the wines of Château d’Aiguilhe are some of the best value in Bordeaux, offering quality at a fair price. This is not that unusual in Castillon of course. Whether or not they appeal personally depends very much on what style of Bordeaux you prefer.

The wines are not the most delicate of Bordeaux styles, in keeping with the wines of the other Stephan von Neipperg estates. The Neipperg approach, making wine in much the same manner as it was maybe a century ago, perhaps engenders such a style when combined with the climate of the 21st century and modern methods of viticulture. The alcohol concentration in the 2010 vintage was 15%, and such a high level is not atypical. The wines are rich and deeply coloured, show a velvety texture and are spicy and substantial. Personally I enjoy the wines, although I think I had some difficulty with some of the earlier vintages reported on here, especially the 2005; I would like to reassess those vintages one day.
