Domaine Philippe Gilbert: Tasting & Drinking
Having garnered a little more experience since that first encounter with the wines of Philippe Gilbert, it remains clear to me that the quality here is good, in fact very good. I remain more convinced by the white wines rather than the reds, although as I indicated in my introduction that is perhaps nothing new, and reflects personal tastes more than any characteristic of the wines.
Nevertheless the whites are certainly fresh, bright, pithy and citric, but also have a fine, reserved character that reflects their limestone-dominated terroir. The red wines are of good quality nevertheless to my palate they remain secondary to the white wines in terms of interest; they show appealing fruit and minerally definition, but have nothing like the vibrancy and conviction of the whites. This is definitely a domaine to watch in this respect, though. (5/7/13, updated 8/3/14)
