Summer 2000 Wines at Majestic

A selection of seven wines from the Majestic range in Summer 2000. (4/7/00)

Tasting Notes

The following wines were tasted in July 2000. Click to locate stockists.

Fontana Candida Frascati Superiore (Latium, Italy) 1999: Almost clear wine. Clean, grassy nose. Palate is unremarkable. If you have some, this might make pleasant afternoon drinking if we have a summer this year! If you don't have any, I don't recommend rushing out to make a purchase.

Domaine Marguerite Carillon Chablis (Burgundy, France) 1998: Another pale wine. Pleasant steely nose, but the palate is again unremarkable. A poor example of Chablis.

Vistasur Chardonnay (Central Valley, Chile) 1998: Pale golden wine - unexpected for a Chilean Chardonnay. Musty, cardboardy nose - corked. Palate confirms this - flat, with a bitter finish. I told the shop assistant (when he asked for my opinion), but the bottle remained out for tasting.

Fortant de France Grenache (VdP d'Oc, France) 1999: A very pale hue worries me somewhat, but the nose is surprisingly obvious, with attractive liquorice aromas. The palate, however, is in keeping with this wines appearance - thin and watery. Not good at all.

Mirrabrook Shiraz Cabernet (South Eastern Australia) 1999: Better colour, but overall unexciting nose and palate. A very bland, industrial wine that could be from just about anywhere.

Lindemans Bin 50 Shiraz (South Eastern Australia) 1999: Again a better colour, an attractive purple hue. Typical Shiraz nose - some blackberry fruit with the ubiquitous oak. Again there is a flat flavour profile and poorly added acidity. Drinkable, but why waste the time?

Kangarilla Road Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale, South Australia) 1997: A good dark hue, and an appealing nose of liquorice, (for the second time today!) black fruits and oak. The palate is fat, and somewhat in the oaky fruit-bomb style of winemaking. Finishes well, with a decent bit of length.
