Profile Updates
The web has inherent advantages over printed publications, something I discussed in my last round of profile updates. Nevertheless, articles and profiles do go out of date; that is why all Winedoctor text is dated, and all tasting notes are dated. As an aside, a well known MW recently sent me a peremptory email informing me that my opinion of English wine was outdated; as he was referring to a comparative tasting of English sparkling wine and non-vintage Champagne published in 2000, I would have though that this was rather an obvious statement. Articles such as that one simply can't be updated - it was an opinion expressed at the time, and that can't be changed. But profiles can be brought up to date, and there has been much to write about recently, especially in Champagne.
As a minor point, I have noticed that articles I have written are cropping up all over the internet, reproduced without my permission, often by wine merchants who, you would have thought, should at least be able to write a few words of their own about the wines they sell. Still, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, some people say. Nevertheless, in order to support my case as original author, all updated articles now contain not only the date of change, but also the original publication date (I used to replace the original date with the update date, if that makes sense). Right, enough of this blurb - on with the updates. (9/6/06)
- There's a new face at Roederer; in January, the reins were handed down to the next generation, as Frédéric Rouzard replaced father Jean-Claude Rouzard as Managing Director. Profile duly updated.
- In my last round of updates I drew attention to the issues surrounding the potential sale of Taittinger. The deal has now been done; Taittinger is back in French hands. Full details in my profile.
- Lanson was the other name on the tip of everyone's tongue; again, here, the deal has been done. As with Taittinger, the new owner is also French; full details inside.
- Domaine des Baumard made the news recently when recent bottlings under screwcap were unveiled. Worthy of comment, I feel.
- There is news of a new generation at Fritz Haag. I give this a quick mention in my all too brief profile, which really needs a whole new makeover, something I've been planning for Germany for a little while now.
- I've amended a few ambiguities in my Latour profile. Thanks to the reader who spotted me mumbling again.
- Domaine Begude is now owned - and has been for some time in fact, I'm a bit slow on this one - by Brit James Kinglake. Having purchased the estate from Bertie Eden in time for the 2004 vintage, he has made his mark on the domaine, with the introduction of full time staff, and screwcaps! When I get around to tasting some of their wines, obviously Begude will need a fresh profile, but for now I have updated my Comte Cathare page.
