Domaine Mouréou & Chapelle L'Enclos
Domaine Mouréou is home to Patrick Ducourneau, an important figure in Madiran. His influence derives from his development of the technique of micro-oxygenation. This involves bubbling tiny quantities of oxygen into the wine, either during fermentation or afterwards, as the rests in tank or barrique. The practice was developed after Madiran winemakers noticed reductive problems (an undesirable stink) in Tannat stored in stainless steel. But the benefits of the process go beyond prevention of reduction; tannins are tamed, colour is reputable stabilised, stuck fermentations are apparently fixed. It's a process that has been lucrative for Ducourneau, who finds himself in demand as a South-West wine consultant.
The domaine was inherited by Ducourneau, having previously been worked by his father. The ever-expanding 18 hectares (including 2.5 hectares of white varieties) of Domaine Mouréou comprises reasonably young vines, less than 30 years old at present, planted on alluvial clay. Tannat and Cabernet Franc are the principal red varieties. The two principal wines made here are both AC Madiran, Domaine Mouréou and Chapelle L'Enclos. There is, in addition, a white Pacherenc du Vic Bilh. (20/6/05)

Domaine Mouréou & Chapelle L'Enclos - Tasting Notes
Chapelle L'Enclos Madiran 1999: Really
dense colour when poured into the glass, with a deep red-purple hue right out to
the rim. A brawny nose, with notes of beef stock alongside deep, dark fruits,
black cherries and smoky currants all rolled into one. Obvious youth on the
palate, which seduces with a wealth of accessible extract and texture. Dark,
mineral-laden fruits, with a stony grip, with some ripe, succulent tannins
rolling in at the end. Good, meaty finish. A wine to seduce, approachable now
but with the substance to go another six years at least. Very good indeed.
