L'Ancienne Cure
L’Ancienne Cure is a 42 hectare family-run domaine located in Colombier, not far from Bergerac, in the South-West of France. Christian Roche currently looks after the estate and vineyards.
The vineyards show a predominance of the white varieties used to produce Monbazillac, the local sweet specialty, these being Semillon (18 hectares), Sauvignon Blanc (5.5 hectares) and Muscadelle (1.5 hectares), the exact same grapes that constitute Monbazillac’s more famous northerly neighbour, Sauternes. The red varieties comprise Merlot (8 ha), Cabernet Sauvignon (5 hectares), Cabernet Franc (3 hectares) and Malbec (1 hectares), again very much a Bordeaux profile.
The range of wines include very good straight white, rosé and red Bergerac, as well as a special red cuvée L'Extase. The straight Monbazillac is also supremely good, although even this is outclassed by the Cuvée L’Abbaye, which includes a high proportion of Muscadelle grapes and spends up to two years in oak prior to bottling. L'Ancienne Cure - Tasting Notes
Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Bergerac 2002: A super colour here; deep,
still with a tinge of purple. Blood and iron on the nose, with tobacco, dark and
crunchy berry fruit with a certain rawness to its presence. Notes of green
pepper, and more than a little grassy too. Balanced palate, although with a lean
texture. Borders on austere, but with food this is very good. Plenty of crunchy
black forest fruits to go with it. There's great character here; this is just
lovely. 16.5/20 (July 2005)

Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac 2002: A pale golden wine. A fresh
and clean nose, of lime blossom and oranges, gentle almond notes, and chalky
minerals. Evident weight and richness on entry, but with a fresh mouthfeel, and
quite decent acidity. Sweet yet bitter blood orange flavour, but with a wealth
of residual sugar which gives an opulent texture. A lovely style here. Drink
over the next 2-3 years, during which this will no doubt open up more. 16+/20

Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac 2000: A decent golden hue. A
lovely nose, showing some botrytis, also some very good honey and apricot notes.
On the palate there is a rich, warm, rounded texture, with moderately low
acidity and a lovely, full, opulent texture. Fat, mouth-coating character with a
creamy richness. A little grip on the finish. This is good. Drink now. 15.5/20

Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Cuvée L'Abbaye Monbazillac 1998: A
resplendent, orange-gold wine. Butter-rich pastry, oranges, quince and apricots
on the nose. A fine palate, showing evident depth of flavour, coffee and toffee
influenced, with smoky quince fruit and marmalade, backed up by a diffuse
minerality. Rich, opulent, luscious texture, balanced by a very precise,
tingling acidity. Very good indeed. Drink over the next five to eight years.
