Domaine Ste Anne
Domaine St Anne was established in 1965 when the Steinmaier family purchased 13 ha which included a few old vines in the sleepy village of Les Celettes. The Steinmaiers were not new to viticulture, having moved from Chalon-sur-Saône in Burgundy, and so over the years that followed they swiftly set about building up a reputable domaine. By 1973 they had acquired a further 10 ha together with a cluster of buildings dating from the 16th Century onwards, and within a few more years they had built a new cuverie and storage buildings. During this time Guy Steinmaier has gradually handed over the running of the estate to his two sons, Jean and Alain.
The soils here are predominantly limestone, and thus best suited to red varieties rather than white, although that didn’t prevent the Steinmaiers planting a good sized plot of Viognier which seems not only to thrive but also produce a very good example of this cultivar. The family have become something akin to Viognier specialists, and after the discovery that some of their vines had different characteristics and gave a dull wine, they have even established a field-selection program to weed out the deficient strains. The vineyards are terraced and co-planted with rye grass to reduce the effect of erosion which has also been a problem.
The wines produced here include several cuvées of Cotes du Rhône. The Cuvée Notre Dame des Celettes is the leading cuvée, incorporating Grenache (60%) from the best plots, with the remaining 40% Syrah and Mourvèdre, whereas the Cuvée Saint Gervais is 50-60% Mourvèdre with equal parts Syrah and Grenache making up the remainder. There is also a 100% Syrah Côtes du Rhône aged in oak, and of course the 100% Viognier Côtes du Rhône. (2/11/04)

Domaine Ste Anne - Tasting Notes
Domaine Ste-Anne Côtes du Rhône St Gervais Syrah Les Morillons 2000: A good depth of
colour here. Quite dense. Sweet blackberry crumble on the nose, a little buttery
edge. Full, quite ripe, creamy style. Beneath it has a ripe, grippy nature, and
an attractively bitter, full presence, as well as the necessary acidity. This is
much more appealing. Approachable but would do well in the cellar, short-term.
From a Wine Society
tasting. 16/20

Grenache 60%, Syrah & Mourvèdre 40%. Deep, rich hue. Showing some maturity.
Slightly tarry, intense, sweet Grenache fruit. Medium bodied, very bright
acidity, balanced. Charred, sweet berry-cherry fruit. A middleweight, drinker's
wine which has a lovely, elegant style. Good texture. Rounded, slightly grippy
finish. Very good. 16.5/20

Domaine Ste Anne Côtes du Rhône Cuvée St Gervais 1998: Mourvèdre 50%,
Grenache 65%, Syrah 25%. Very dark colour, but still with a purple tinge. A
gamey nose, with sweet-cured meat. Great elegance here, sweet cherry fruit but
with balance and fluidity. Still has firm tannins on the endpalate though.
Pastille edge to the black fruits. A touch of creaminess to the texture. Grippy
finish. Very good indeed. 17/20 (November 2004)
