Alsace: The Grand Cru Vineyards
There are currently 50 Grand Cru sites in Alsace, although there is much controversy surrounding the system, which was only developed through the 1970s and early 1980s, with the first 25 sites declared in 1983. As I have said elsewhere, a number of prominent domaines are opposed to the Grand Cru system. Reasons include the rapid development of large numbers of Grand Cru sites, perhaps without developing Premier Cru sites, poor definition of the size and exact borders of the individual Grands Crus, as well as a lack of respect for the terroir of the sites when the boundaries are defined.
The 50 Grands Crus are as follows, with a few personal notes where appropriate. Where the site has not been fully delimited, size given is approximate. For a fuller account of the Alsatian Grands Crus, I suggest Wines of Alsace or Sotheby's Encyclopedia, both by Tom Stevenson.
Bas-Rhin
- Altenberg de Bergbieten (Bergbieten, 29.06 ha)
- Bruderthal (Molsheim, approx. 18 ha)
- Engelberg (Dahlenheim, approx. 15 ha)
- Frankstein (Dambach-la-Ville, approx 56 ha)
- Kastelberg (Andlau, 5.82 ha) This is a site reknowned for Riesling, with Marc Kreydenweiss producing one of the best.
- Kirchberg de Barr (Barr, 40.63 ha)
- Moenchberg (Andlau & Eichhoffen, 11.83 ha) Marc Kreydenweiss makes a very good Pinot Gris.
- Muenchberg (Nothalten, 17.7 ha) Great Riesling and Pinot Gris from André Ostertag.
- Praelatenberg (Orschwiller & Kintzheim, approx. 19 ha)
- Steinklotz (Marlenheim, 40.6 ha)
- Winzenberg (Blienschwiller, 19.2 ha)
Haut-Rhin
- Altenberg de Bergheim (Bergheim, 35.06 ha)
- Altenberg de Wolxheim (Wolxheim, approx. 31 ha)
- Brand (Turckheim, 57.95 ha) One of the more renowned of all the Grands Crus. Top wines, particularly Gewurztraminer, from Zind Humbrecht, JosMeyer and CV Turckheim.
- Eichberg (Eguisheim, 57.62 ha) Kuentz-Bas make a superb Gewurztraminer. The source of fruit for Leon Beyer's Comtes d'Eguisheim Gewurztraminer, although you will never see the designation on the label.
- Florimont (Ingersheim, approx. 21 ha)
- Froehn (Zellenberg, approx. 15 ha) Top Muscat and other varieties from Jean Becker.
- Furstentum (Kientzheim & Sigolsheim, 30.5 ha) Worked by Domaine Weinbach, together with the lieu-dit Altenbourg, which lies at the foot of Furstentum.
- Geisberg (Ribeauvillé, 8.53 ha)
- Gloeckelberg (Rodern & St-Hippolyte, 23.4 ha)
- Goldert (Gueberschwihr, 45.35 ha) Top growers here include Zind Humbrecht and Ernest Burn. Both produce great Muscats.
- Hatschbourg (Hattstatt & Voegtlinshoffen, 47.36 ha)
- Hengst (Wintzenheim, 75.78 ha) Some growers, such as JosMeyer, persist with varieties ineligible for Grand Cru status, such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Chasselas, on this site. For this reason they are not permitted to bear the name of the Grand Cru on the label, and are labelled "H". Other top wines are from Zind Humbrecht and Albert Mann.
- Kanzlerberg (Bergheim, 3.23 ha) Good wines from Gustave Lorentz and Spielmann.
- Kessler (Guebwiller, 28.53 ha) A good site for Gewurztraminer, with Schlumberger producing one of the best.
- Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé (Ribeauvillé, 11.4 ha)
- Kitterlé (Guebwiller, 25.79 ha) Probably the best wines from this Cru are produced by Schlumberger.
- Mambourg (Sigolsheim, approx. 62 ha) Domaine Weinbach own vines here.
- Mandelberg (Mittelwihr, approx. 22 ha)
- Marckrain (Bennwihr & Sigolsheim, approx. 59 ha)

- Osterberg (Ribeauvillé, approx. 25 ha) The source of the fruit for Trimbach's Cuvée Frédéric Emile Riesling.
- Pfersigberg (Eguisheim, approx. 75 ha) Good wines from Kuentz-Bas, one of my personal favourite domaines, are produced here. Also top Muscat from Bruno Sorg and Riesling from Léon Beyer.
- Pfingstberg (Orschwihr, approx. 28 ha)
- Rangen (Thann & Vieux Thann, 18.81 ha) One of the more famous Grand Cru sites, this is a terraced vineyard above the River Thur. Replanted in the 1970s it is today exploited by Zind Humbrecht and Schoffit.
- Rosacker (Hunawihr, 26.18 ha) Includes the lieux-dit Clos Ste-Hune, owned by Trimbach. You will never see Grand Cru Rosacker on the label.
- Saering (Guebwiller, 26.75 ha) One of Schlumberger's Grand Cru sites, here they produce a good Riesling.
- Schlossberg (Kaysersberg & Kientzheim, 80.28 ha) Domaine Weinbach owns some vines here, as do Paul Blanck and Albert Mann.
- Schoenenberg (Riquewihr, approx. 53 ha) Marcel Deiss is top producer from this historical vineyard, producing a fine Riesling. Hugel own a small plot.
- Sommerberg (Niedermorschwihr & Katzenthal, 28.36 ha) Good Rieslings from Albert Boxler and CV Turckheim.
- Sonnenglanz (Beblenheim, 32.8 ha) Good Gewurztraminer and Tokay-Pinot Gris from Bott-Geyl.
- Spiegel (Bergholtz & Guebwiller, 18.26 ha)
- Sporen (Riquewihr, approx. 24 ha) Famous for Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Top producer is probably Hugel, who like some other producers does not use Grand Cru designations on the labels.
