Domaine du Paternel

Domaine du Paternel is home to Jean-Pierre Santini, a Corsican, who runs this estate first planted by his aunt. The first harvest was in 1951, and as the years have passed the vineyards have expanded, and now approach 30 hectares. Today Jean-Pierre is ably assisted by his sons, Victor and Hugo, and the domaine has since 1993 released a special cuvée named after this pair.

There are two cuvées produced with each vintage, a white and a rosé. The white is harvested by hand typically at 35 hl/ha, and comprises 30% each of Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc, with the remainder being Bourboulenc, known locally as Doucillon. The must undergoes a pneumatic pressing before temperature controlled fermentation, followed by malolactic. The resulting wine is fresh, but with the ability to age. The rosé is produced using very similar methods, and is predominantly Grenache (70%) with 20% Cinsaut and 10% Mourvèdre. Finally the 100% Marsanne Cuvée Victor et Hugo is the eponymously named cuvée mentioned above. (9/5/05)

2003

Domaine du Paternel Cassis Rosé 2003: Quite a pale rosé, just a little too deep and pink to be onion skin, but close. Initially very forward crushed strawberries on the nose, settling to a more restrained, leafy red fruit with time. Nice acidic structure on the palate, providing freshness to the subtly rounded mouthfeel. There are also one or two tannins lurking here, so this is a rosé with a touch of grip. Firm finish, just showing a little note of honey or caramel, but it is very faint. Good. 16/20 (May 2005) Label

2002

Domaine du Paternel Cassis Blanc 2002: Moderate hue. Lovely nose of fresh, slightly herbal, stone fruit and pears. Full, firm, structured palate, but with a lemony freshness alongside the weight and grip which makes this wine such a good match with food. I found it worked brilliantly with barbecued seafood. Very good indeed. 17/20 (May 2005) Label
